Faneromeni is a kitesurfing spot on the north coast of eastern Crete, between Sitia and the Kouremenos area. The beach faces north, receiving the Meltemi more directly and head-on than east coast spots like Kouremenos.
An intermediate spot with consistent onshore wind conditions in summer. Less known than Kouremenos, it offers an interesting alternative with fewer people and different water conditions.
Spot with no kite school on site. Launching from sand/pebble beach. Decent sailing space. Works from June to September with the onshore Meltemi from the north.
Choppy water with onshore chop and small waves. The frontal wind creates more formed sea conditions than Kouremenos. Sandy and rocky bottom. Clear water.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking available along the coastal road. Easy access from the Sitia-Palekastro main road. A few tavernas in the nearby village.
No permanent supervision. Possible rocks in the water near beach ends. Lateral current in strong Meltemi. Rapid dehydration – bring water and sun protection.
Meltemi arrives directly from N/NNW as onshore on this north coast. Typical strength 15-25 knots from June to September. More constant and less lateral wind than Kouremenos – here it's pure onshore.
Possible strengthening in early afternoon. Moderate gusts possible due to coastal terrain. Good reliability in peak summer.
