Platanias is a lively seaside resort on the north coast of western Crete, west of Chania. The long north-facing sand beach receives the Meltemi directly. It's one of the most developed tourist areas in western Crete.
The Meltemi blows onshore from N/NNW, creating classic north Cretan coast conditions. The spot suits intermediates thanks to onshore wind facilitating return, but chop can build in sustained wind.
Launching from sand beach. Watch for high tourist traffic – choose a zone away from swimmers. Respect designated swimming areas. No dedicated kite school at Platanias but schools operate in the Chania region.
Works from June to September. Foiling is suited for moderate wind days.
Open water with onshore chop formed by the Meltemi. Waves possible in sustained wind. Sandy bottom, progressive depth. Sea of Crete water, clear and warm in summer (23-26°C).
Intermediate
Open all year round
Seaside resort with numerous parking options. Complete tourist infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, bars, shops). Well served by the national road from Chania (10km).
Very busy tourist zone – collision risk with swimmers. Strictly respect designated swimming zones. Parasols and sunbeds on the beach limiting launch space. Moderate coastal current possible.
Onshore Meltemi from N/NNW, typically 15-22 knots from June to September. Regular and reliable wind on this exposed north coast. Wind is slightly less strong than in eastern Crete (Kouremenos) but remains very rideable.
Thermal reinforcement in early afternoon. The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) to the south don't significantly interfere with the north flow at this location.
