Steinhuder Meer is the largest lake in Lower Saxony, 30 km northwest of Hanover. The main spot is the "Weiße Düne" (white dune) in Mardorf, on the south shore. 500m standing area, flat to choppy water depending on wind. Ideal for beginners and freestyle. The lake is surrounded by reeds and protected natural areas. Regulated season: kite allowed from March 20 to November 15 (marked zone in Mardorf). Outside this period, the lake is closed for ornithological reasons.

Free surfer parking (motorhomes prohibited). Park in Mardorf if necessary. 400m walk to the water.
Wind specificities
Best directions: S to SW and SE. Northern directions are not recommended from Mardorf (sheltered) — in that case, go to the opposite side (Steinhude/Badeinsel, but kite is prohibited there). In moderate wind, excellent warm-up spot. In strong wind, watch out for steep chop.
Hazards
In strong wind, short steep waves (chop) form quickly — stay in the standing area in strong conditions. In east to SE onshore wind, it can be difficult to get out of and back into the bay. Muddy and sometimes rocky bottom — surf shoes recommended. Kite prohibited on the Badeinsel.
