Châtelaillon-Plage is a popular kitesurf spot on the Charente coast, 10km south of La Rochelle. The wide sandy beach faces west-southwest with good exposure to south and southwest Atlantic winds. A favourite spot for the La Rochelle kite and windsurf community with plenty of launch space. Intermediate level.
Launch from the wide sandy beach south of town. South to southwest wind arrives cross-onshore — excellent conditions. Respect the bathing zones marked in summer. Tidal range is significant — check tide tables. Self-organised spot with informal rider etiquette.
Open all year round
Open year-round. Best season: May to October. Closest quality kite spot to La Rochelle city — busy in summer with local riders. Best wind: south to southwest, typically afternoons.
Intermediate
Atlantic coast with moderate chop of 0.3 to 0.7m in south to southwest wind. Sandy bottom. Significant tidal range — beach is wide at low tide and narrow at high tide. No major swell on this south-facing section of coast. Flat to slightly choppy conditions most of the time.
South to southwest winds are the primary window — they arrive onshore or cross-onshore on this section of coast. West and northwest winds also work as the beach curves slightly. The La Rochelle area benefits from Atlantic thermal cycles in summer giving consistent afternoon breezes. Wind is generally clean with a long sea fetch to the south.
