Baie de Douarnenez - Overview

Baie de Douarnenez - Overview

Overview

The Baie de Douarnenez, one of the most beautiful bays in Brittany, offers an exceptional kitesurf playground — 10km across, sheltered from the Atlantic swell by the Cap Sizun headland to the south. Several access points around the bay depending on wind direction. FFVL-labelled spot. Kitesardin School is based here.

SE and E winds produce offshore conditions — always ride with an experienced buddy or motorised assistance in these sectors. Superb views of the bay while riding.

Hazards

SE and E winds create offshore conditions — do not venture alone without motorised assistance in these sectors. The bay is large and return against the wind can be exhausting.

Paragliders from the cliffs, surf, char à voile, sailing, and kayaks: busy bay, respect all users. Wetsuit required year-round.

Wind specificities

The Baie de Douarnenez is navigable in almost all wind directions. Best sectors:

  • N / NE: side-onshore on the north shore — flat water, great fetch, best for beginners and freestyle.
  • NW: side to onshore — thermal in summer, reliable in the afternoon 12–20kt.
  • W / SW: onshore — swell enters the bay but remains moderate compared to the open Atlantic.
  • SE / E: avoid without motorised assistance — offshore on the north shore.

Thermal winds are less reliable here than on the open coast — the bay can drop suddenly. Wind tends to increase as you move further from shore.
