Overview

Palavas-les-Flots — iconic seaside resort 15 min from Montpellier. No dedicated kite zone on the Palavas beach itself, but it's the starting point for many schools that take riders by boat to the best spots in the region depending on conditions: Petit Travers, Grand Travers, Villeneuve, Aresquiers, Espiguette. In Tramontane (NW) offshore: exceptional 10 km flat water surface between Palavas and Frontignan, accessible only by boat. Rarely overcrowded, ideal year-round. Strategic base in the middle of the bay, equidistant from the eastern spots (Espiguette, ~10 km) and western spots (Villeneuve/Frontignan, ~10 km).

Palavas is not a direct practice spot but a school hub. Instructors choose the spot of the day based on the wind: NW Tramontane / N Mistral: boat to offshore beaches (Palavas-Frontignan, 10 km flat) or Villeneuve. SW Thermal: Petit Travers, Grand Travers, La Grande-Motte. SE Marin: Petit Travers, Grande-Motte TPO, or Espiguette/Port Camargue.

Tramontane (NW): offshore — pushes out to sea. No autonomous practice. Schools access by boat a 10 km flat water surface between Palavas and Frontignan, rarely overcrowded. SW Thermal: afternoon summer breeze, onshore. Directed to Petit Travers or Grand Travers. SE Marin: works, waves possible. Neighboring spots better suited (Grande-Motte TPO protected by the breakwater).
Hazards
No official dedicated kite zone on the Palavas beach itself — practice takes place at neighboring spots (Petit Travers, Villeneuve, Aresquiers) depending on the wind. Heavy tourist traffic in summer. N/NW wind (Tramontane): offshore, pushes out to sea — schools use a boat to access the flat water between Palavas and Frontignan (10 km of beach).
