Canet-Plage Sud / Port Cipriano — Canet-en-Roussillon, Pyrénées-Orientales. Second official kite spot of Canet, just north of Pont des Basses. Immense sandy beach with a huge dedicated kite zone (windsurfers not admitted in this section). Marked with buoys in summer.
Benefits from one of the most exceptional thermal regimes in the Languedoc. When the temperature difference between land and sea is high enough, a S/SE wind builds during the afternoon and accelerates — can reach 25-30 knots, reinforced by Marin (SE). Plan d'eau generally choppy, small swell creates nice kickers and small surf waves.
Perfect spot for beginners in summer (light wind, digue creates clean waves). In winter: Tramontane pushes offshore, only for very experienced riders. If only one spot to retain in the Pyrénées-Orientales for advanced kite: this is it.
Canet Kite Club (CKC) — Local kite association managing the kite zone. We Love Kite — Year-round kite school, small groups + individual, all equipment provided. Kitoo — Kite & wingfoil school at Pont des Basses / Canet. CBCM Boarder Club — Multi-sport school nearby.
Sandy bottom. Beach faces ESE. By Marin (SE) side-on starboard: nice waves building, can reach 1.50-2 m during strong SE. Near the digue to the right: beautiful right-hand wave in 2 sections, 3-4 rollers on good days. Plan d'eau generally choppy. By thermal S: small swell, nice kickers. By Tramontane NW: flat but extremely gusty and offshore. Water 14-16°C winter, 20-25°C summer.

Open all year round
Sailing year-round. Arrêté municipal: kite zone regulated from 1 May to 30 September — buoys in the water, signage on the beach. Best: summer (June-September) for thermal SE. Winter: only experienced, Tramontane offshore dangerous.
Large parking nearby. Kite preparation area on the left when arriving from parking — immense, dedicated exclusively to kite (no windsurf). Ganivelles on the beach — keep kite away from wooden posts.
Tramontane offshore (NW): extremely strong and gusty at Canet — pushes rapidly out to sea. Déconseillé sans bateau de sécurité in Tramontane. Fall back to étang de Salses (ancienne base d'hydravions) instead. Strong SE: big waves form, difficult to get through the shorebreak to reach offshore. Ganivelles: wooden posts on the beach, never approach with your kite inflated. Summer crowds: tourists swim in the kite zone — strict balisage 1 May–30 September.
Thermal S/SE (Marin): THE wind of Canet. Exceptional summer thermal that builds in the afternoon (15h-18h), typically 15-20 kts, can reach 25-30 kts reinforced by Marin. SE enters side-on starboard and creates excellent surfkite conditions near the digue.
Tramontane (NW): dominant regional wind, 300+ days/year. At Canet: extremely strong, gusty and offshore — DANGEROUS. Only experienced riders with safety boat. When Tramontane: better to fall back to étang de Salses or Leucate.
Tip: webcam live available on Viewsurf to check conditions before driving. Aquarium, musée du jouet et de l'auto nearby for non-riding days.
