Snowkite spot on the vast Aubrac plateau, between the village of Aubrac and Nasbinals. Connected to Col de Bonnecombe (11 km southeast), the two spots together form one of the largest snowkite playgrounds in France. The starting point is at Col d'Aubrac (1340 m), near Lac des Moines. The plateau offers an immense and wild terrain with ridges, varied slopes and endless open spaces. With NE wind, it's possible to kite-tour all the way to Col de Bonnecombe.
The terrain is technical: numerous barbed wire fences separating pastures, counter-slopes, wind shadows behind forests, and streams sometimes hidden under snow. But for riders who love adventure and exploration, it's an exceptional spot with stunning landscapes. FFVL-labelled spot.
Two options depending on conditions and wind direction. Option 1: D987 at Col d'Aubrac, or the electrical substation on D219 (a few dozen meters after the intersection). Option 2: Lac des Moines parking (dam), if D219 is passable and wind is from south sector or has a westerly component. Note: D219 is often snow-covered in the morning, snowplow passes around 10-11 AM.
Hazards
Barbed wire fences everywhere, sometimes hidden under snow — the main hazard. Some trees and rocks. Streams barely visible and not always covered by snow. Counter-slopes that can trap riders (loss of wind). Wind shadows behind forests.
Cross-country skiers (ski jooring) and snowshoers may be present. Very limited mobile coverage on the plateau. Do not venture out alone without experience, GPS and good knowledge of the terrain.
