Spot de Saint-Efflam - Baie de Saint-Michel-en-Grève

Saint-Efflam - Baie de Saint-Michel-en-Grève

Saint-Efflam - Baie de Saint-Michel-en-Grève

Overview

Saint-Efflam is the eastern beach of the large Baie de Saint-Michel-en-Grève (Côtes d'Armor), a continuous sandy bay stretching several kilometres between Plestin-les-Grèves and Saint-Michel-en-Grève. One of the top 3 kite regions in Brittany for wind statistics — up to 300 navigable days/year if tides and orientations are well known. The gigantic tidal range (up to 12m) transforms the spot dramatically: lagoon-like turquoise flat water near high tide, vast sand flats at low tide. Saint-Efflam is preferred for north winds; Saint-Michel-en-Grève (500m west) for west winds. Kite's Cool school and shop based at Saint-Michel-en-Grève.

Local association recommendations

Kite's Cool (kitescool.fr) — kitesurf, kitefoil, wingfoil school and shop based on Plage de Saint-Michel-en-Grève (adjacent spot, same beach). École de Kitesurf Bretagne (ecolekitesurfbretagne.com) — itinerant school covering Baie de Lannion.

Spot functioning

Saint-Efflam, commune of Plestin-les-Grèves. Access from N12 (Morlaix–Brest), east on D786 toward Lannion, past Plestin-les-Grèves. Kite's Cool school at Saint-Michel-en-Grève — kitesurf, kitefoil, wingfoil, wingspeed (school and shop on the beach). Best spot by N wind. SW wind better at Goas-Trez (a few km north). NE thermal in afternoon (spring/summer). Consult tide tables: 12m tidal range completely transforms conditions.

Hazards

Lannion region: exceptional tidal range up to 12m — one of the largest in France. Strong currents throughout the bay. Saint-Efflam beach is part of the continuous Saint-Michel-en-Grève bay: respect zones (kite zone, swimming zone). Green algae present in summer — avoid letting your kite land in them. Strong NW winds can generate significant waves at high tide. Never ride alone.

Wind specificities

Ideal orientation: N and NE (best at Saint-Efflam). West and NW also good — Saint-Michel-en-Grève (500m west) slightly better for those. NE thermal afternoon breeze appears in spring and summer — known spot for catching it. SW winds more gusty and better at Goas-Trez (Trébeurden). With 12m tidal range, conditions change rapidly: flat lagoon at high tide, wide sand flats at low tide. 300 navigable days/year for those who know the area well.
