South Beach is a kitesurfing spot located near Portland, in western Victoria. This south-facing beach faces the Bass Strait and receives powerful swells from the Southern Ocean. The spot is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders due to the power of the waves and currents. The prevailing winds blow from the south-west, offering excellent side-shore to side-onshore conditions for kitesurfing. The Portland region is one of the windiest in Victoria, benefiting from regular winds almost all year round. In summer, thermal breezes reinforce the south-west winds in the afternoon. The beach is long and offers enough space for launching and landing kites. Watch out for rocks at the ends of the beach and coastal currents which can be strong in heavy swell.
