Merville-Franceville is THE reference kitesurf spot in Normandy — the largest beach in the region, usable regardless of tide or wind direction. Located at the mouth of the Orne estuary in the Baie de Sallenelles, just 2h from Paris and 20 min from Caen, it attracts a large number of riders every year and hosts its own annual kitesurf festival.
The immense 7 km beach (200 m wide in places) has no rocks or obstacles, a gentle slope and sandbanks that either flatten the water for beginners or create wave sections for the more advanced. NE sea breeze builds in the afternoon — summer sessions become increasingly reliable. With SW winds, an alternative option opens up in the Baie de Sallenelles lagoons, perfect for safe flat water riding.
The only dedicated kite zone in Calvados: authorised year-round. Kite-R Évolution school on-site since 2002, with full facilities (clubhouse, showers, lockers, rental). FFVL-labeled spot.

From Franceville: follow Boulevard Wattier (along the beach) westward. At the end of the boulevard, there's a roundabout and a wooden barrier reading "zone de kitesurf". No parking at the barrier or on the path (even in December). Park in the street, then carry gear along the dirt path to the beach. The kite zone is on the left — in summer (July-August), well marked.

The last 300 m of beach to the far west are permanently prohibited by nature reserve order (bird reserve) — forbidden to navigate or access. Avoid launching near dune vegetation (thorny shrubs), keep 100 m of distance — any error at launch and you'll be stuck in them.
Southerly winds are offshore — very unpredictable and gusty (land thermals). Do not practice alone with S/SW winds. In summer (July-August), the kite zone is on the LEFT side (west) — well marked. No obstacles, but some sandbanks create varying shore break or flat water depending on tide and position.
Works in almost all wind directions except pure south. Best: NE, N, NW, W (onshore to side-onshore). NE sea breeze: builds in the afternoon in summer, typically reaching 16-18 knots — the most reliable summer wind. NW: slightly more consistent wave building. SW: offshore side — elegant long lefts possible, but surveillance required (school boat available). With SE-SW winds, the Baie de Sallenelles lagoons (east side) offer safe flat water. Strong NE Venturi effect from the Orne estuary when wind blows from that direction.
