New Brighton North is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in Christchurch, located on the long sandy beach that borders the east side of the city. This spot is part of the famous Pegasus Bay and is the heart of the Canterbury kite scene. The local kitesurfing community is very active here, and this is often where you will find the most riders on the water during windy days. The main wind is the Canterbury "Nor'wester", a powerful thermal wind from the north-east that regularly blows between 20 and 35 knots during the summer season (October to March). This wind is onshore to cross-onshore on this east-facing beach, creating wave and chop conditions ideal for wave-riding and jumps. South days bring a cold side-shore wind with a more organised swell. The New Brighton beach offers immense space for launching and landing kites. The bottom is sandy and progressive, with some sandbanks that create wave zones. Longshore currents can be present in heavy swell. The New Brighton pier (The Pier) is a useful landmark but also an obstacle to avoid while sailing. This spot suits riders of all levels, with beginners benefiting from moderate wind days while advanced riders enjoy the muscular conditions of a strong Nor'wester. Several kite schools operate in the area. Parking is easily accessible along Marine Parade.
