Overview

Lyall Bay is one of Wellington's most well-known kitesurfing spots, located on the south coast of the city, right next to Wellington International Airport. This long sandy bay faces the Cook Strait and catches significant south swell, producing powerful waves that make it a demanding playground. It is the reference spot for advanced riders in the New Zealand capital. Conditions at Lyall Bay are reserved for experts. The combination of powerful waves, gusty onshore winds from the south, the proximity of the road and buildings on the beach, as well as the presence of windsurfers, makes this spot unsuitable for any rider who does not perfectly master upwind riding, jumps and jibes. The prevailing south wind is cross-onshore from the right, meaning starboard tacks to get out through the shore break. IMPORTANT: before sailing at Lyall Bay, it is MANDATORY to contact the airport control tower to obtain permission to fly kite wings in the area. The control tower has full responsibility for the airspace and can prohibit kiting at any time. The only authorised place to set up, launch and land is at the west end of the beach, in front of the toilet block, where windsurfers also rig. This spot nevertheless offers some of Wellington's best wave conditions for experienced riders.
