Le Dossen is one of the most renowned wave spots of north Finistère and the wider Léon coast, situated on the commune of Santec, facing the Île de Sieck. 1.5km of fine sand exposed west, capturing Atlantic swell all year. Particularly reputed for kitesurf in waves, windsurf and buggy/land kite.
An exceptional site — vast, rarely overcrowded, backed by the 97-hectare Santec coastal forest. Accessible to intermediate riders in moderate conditions, more demanding in swell. AvelWest describes it as particularly well-reputed for its waves.
FFVL labelled. Association Kitesurf29 (kitesurf29.fr) — local kitesurf association. Char à voile base on site (Centre Bon Vent). Dossen Surf School — surf courses on the beach. AvelWest also active in the sector.
From Morlaix (~25 min) or Brest (~45 min via Roscoff): direction Saint-Pol-de-Léon, then Santec, follow signs for "Le Dossen / Centre Bon Vent". Car park at the char à voile centre in the middle of the beach. Camping des Dunes directly on site (practical for road trips). Fast food snack bar on the car park in season.
At low tide: very wide beach, 700m+ retreat — be aware of the char à voile right-of-way zone. At mid rising tide: best kite conditions (good swell, less crowd). At high tide: waves break at the beach steps.
Beach break exposed west — captures all Atlantic swell. Sandy bottom. Waves from 0.3m to 3m+ in autumn/winter swells. At low tide, rocks appear on the right (north) — stay in the sandy central zone. Large area, rarely congested. At left (south) at low tide: waves roll right to left, more sheltered from S/SW wind.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Free car park at Centre Bon Vent (char à voile centre), middle of the beach. Camping des Dunes on site. From Santec or Saint-Pol-de-Léon, follow "Le Dossen" signs.
Île de Sieck disrupts NW wind — gusts and lulls in the NW sector. Avoid the char à voile track at low tide — they have right of way on the beach. Rocks visible on the right (north) at big low tide coefficients. Seaweed (goémon) — north Finistère specialty: risk of lines catching. At high tide: pronounced shorebreak at the beach steps. S/SW can be gusty and irregular.
Wind from SSW to W is the most favourable — W is the classic Atlantic depression wind, SSW to SW also good. Navigable from S to N. NW: take into account the disruption generated by the Île de Sieck which closes the north of the zone — gusty and irregular in NW. SE/ESE: cross-offshore, good for cleaner wave conditions. S/SW: can be irregular and gusty — AvelWest advises caution. Works from 12 knots.
