Farewell Spit

New Zealand

Overview

Farewell Spit is a unique kitesurfing spot located at the northern tip of the South Island, in the Tasman region. It is New Zealand's longest sand spit, stretching approximately 35 kilometres, of which 25 kilometres is stable land and 5 kilometres is mobile sand. The spit forms the northern side of Golden Bay, offering an exceptional and sheltered natural setting. Farewell Spit is almost always windy with a steady wind. The unique advantage of this spot is that wind can come from any direction: with a medium to long walk, you can always find a suitable spot along the spit. The spot is rated as suitable for beginners thanks to shallow and flat waters in sheltered areas. However, access requires a 4-kilometre walk from the car park, as public access is limited to the first 4 kilometres of the spit. Farewell Spit has a higher protection status than a national park, and vehicle access is only permitted for supervised guided tours. It is a spot for adventurers who appreciate isolation and wild nature. The Golden Bay region as a whole is one of the best places in New Zealand for kitesurfing, with regular thermal winds from the north and north-west from September to December.
