Overview

Bethells Beach (Te Henga) is a spectacular wild black sand beach on the west coast of Auckland, at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges. Facing west towards the Tasman Sea, this beach is renowned for its powerful surf conditions and dramatic landscape. Lake Wainamu, accessible through the dunes, offers a unique setting. W, NW and SW winds are dominant under the influence of the "Roaring Forties". The spot is reserved for expert riders due to very dangerous currents, powerful rips and isolation. The swell is constant and waves can be massive. Access is via a winding road. Superb hikes in the area (Lake Wainamu, dunes).
