Overview

Tahunanui is Nelson's main kitesurfing spot, located on the city's most popular beach, on the north coast of the South Island. Tahunanui Beach is a large golden sand beach facing north-west, towards Tasman Bay. It is the heart of the Nelson kite community and one of the most accessible spots in the region. Nelson is renowned for being New Zealand's sunniest city, and Tahunanui benefits from reliable north-east sea breezes that develop regularly during summer afternoons. Synoptic north-west winds are also very common and can be strong. The wind is generally cross-shore to onshore, offering safe conditions with the ability to easily return to the beach. The water at Tahunanui is relatively sheltered by the Boulder Bank which reduces offshore swell. At high tide, the water is spacious with light chop. At low tide, vast stretches of sand are exposed, significantly reducing the navigable area. It is advisable to sail around mid-tide to high tide. The sandy bottom and gentle slope make it a perfect spot for beginners. Tahunanui has excellent facilities: large free car park, showers, toilets, cafes and restaurants nearby. Several kitesurfing schools operate from this beach. The local community is active with the Nelson Kite Club regularly organising events.
