Lake Tekapo is a spectacular kitesurfing spot located in the heart of Mackenzie Country, in the Canterbury highlands, at 710 metres altitude. This glacial lake with turquoise waters, fed by the Southern Alps glaciers, offers a breathtaking setting with views of Mount Cook and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The prevailing wind is the Nor'wester, a powerful foehn wind descending from the Southern Alps. This wind can be very strong and irregular, with violent gusts. Katabatic winds from the south and south-west are also frequent. The lake is large and can develop significant chop in strong wind. The water is extremely cold year-round (rarely above 12°C), a thick wetsuit is essential. The bottom is rocky in places. No tides. Spot for intermediate to advanced riders due to unpredictable winds and cold water.
