Sumner is one of the most iconic kitesurf spots in Christchurch and the entire Canterbury region of New Zealand. Located at the southern end of Pegasus Bay, at the foot of the Sumner Head hills, this spot benefits from a unique exposure to the region's thermal and synoptic winds. Sumner Beach is a historic meeting point for Christchurch kitesurfers, who have been riding here since the early days of the sport in New Zealand. The dominant wind at Sumner is the famous Canterbury "Nor'wester", a hot dry northeast wind that descends from the Southern Alps through the foehn effect. This wind can be extremely powerful, often between 25 and 40 knots, with gusts that can exceed 50 knots. The Nor'wester is cross-shore at Sumner, blowing parallel to the coast, creating excellent kitesurfing conditions. Alternately, south and southwest winds bring cooler conditions with more pronounced swell. The water conditions at Sumner vary considerably. In moderate northeast wind, the sea is relatively clean with light chop. In strong Nor'wester, conditions become muscular with tight chop and shore break waves. Southern swell brings surfable waves that add an extra dimension to the session. Currents can be significant, especially near the Avon-Heathcote estuary entrance. Sumner is a spot suitable for intermediate to advanced riders. Beginners should avoid strong Nor'wester days. The beach offers good water access, with fine sand and a spacious launch zone. Sumner village offers many cafes and restaurants, making it a pleasant place to spend the day between sessions.
