Muriwai Beach is one of the most spectacular and demanding kitesurf spots in the Auckland region, located on the wild west coast about 45 minutes from the city center. This immense black sand beach stretches for kilometers, battered by powerful Tasman Sea swells and dominant west winds generated by the "Roaring Forties". Muriwai is a legendary spot for experienced riders seeking waves and thrills. Wind conditions are excellent with dominant northwest to southwest winds, blowing regularly and powerfully. The best conditions are at mid-tide or low tide, with NW to SW winds. Swell is near-permanent, with 85% consistency in winter. Waves can be massive, offering an exceptional playground for wave kitesurfing. In summer, conditions are milder but remain challenging. WARNING: Muriwai is reserved for experienced riders. Currents and rips are extremely powerful and dangerous. Fatal accidents have occurred on this beach. If your kite falls in the waves, you must be able to relaunch quickly or release your equipment. It is imperative to never ride alone and to know local conditions well before entering the water. Despite its wild character, Muriwai has parking, toilets and the Sand Dunz Beach Cafe for refreshments. The famous gannet colony is visible from the viewing platforms atop the cliffs, from August to March. The Waitakere Ranges offer superb hikes in the native forest nearby.
