North Piha is one of the most iconic surf and kitesurf spots in New Zealand, located on Auckland's wild west coast in the Waitakere Ranges. This black sand beach, facing southwest, captures a great amount of Tasman Sea swell and offers consistent waves year-round. The north of the bay receives more power, making it the best spot when the swell is small. Wind conditions are dominated by west and southwest flows, typical of the New Zealand west coast under the influence of the "Roaring Forties". Wave consistency reaches 85% in winter, with SW and W swells generating long powerful waves. In summer, conditions are calmer but remain challenging. The best sailing conditions are found around mid-tide to high tide. North Piha is reserved for very experienced riders. Currents are extremely powerful, rips are dangerous, and waves can be massive. The beach is isolated and rescue is not immediate. It is imperative to ride with wave-appropriate equipment and never go alone. Lion Rock, the iconic rock formation separating North and South Piha, is an unmissable natural landmark. Access is via a winding road through the Waitakere Ranges forest, about 45 minutes from Auckland. Parking is limited on busy days. The surrounding hikes (Kitekite Falls, Mercer Bay Loop) and native forest make Piha a complete destination for nature lovers.
