Mission Bay is Auckland's most iconic urban kitesurf spot, located along Tamaki Drive just 10 minutes from the city center. This northeast-facing bay offers a spectacular setting with views of Rangitoto Island and the Hauraki Gulf. It is one of the rare spots in the world where you can ride with a big city skyline in the background. Mission Bay's water area is relatively sheltered thanks to its position in the Hauraki Gulf. The dominant northeast winds create pleasant sailing conditions, with moderate chop. The spot works mainly with northeast breezes in summer and southwest winds that accelerate between the land masses in winter. Intermediate level is required due to the many water users sharing the area. The Mission Bay promenade is one of the liveliest in Auckland, lined with restaurants, ice cream shops, cafes and boutiques. Parking can be difficult on fine days and summer weekends. The neighboring spots of Kohimarama and St Heliers offer alternatives if Mission Bay is too crowded. Several water sports schools operate in the bay. Watch out for commercial shipping and ferries in the gulf. Tides significantly affect water depth, and at low tide, some areas become very shallow. Mission Bay is also an excellent starting point for exploring Auckland's east coast beaches along Tamaki Drive.
