Karekare is a wild black sand beach on Auckland's west coast, nestled at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges. Made famous by the film "The Piano", this spectacular beach is battered by powerful Tasman Sea swells. W, NW and SW winds are dominant. The spot is reserved for experts due to extremely dangerous currents, powerful rips and isolation. Access is limited by a narrow road through the forest. The wild beauty of the location makes it a hiking and surfing destination for the most experienced.
