Takapuna Beach is one of the most popular kitesurf spots in Auckland, located on the North Shore facing the Hauraki Gulf. This golden sand beach offers crystal-clear waters sheltered by the volcanic island of Rangitoto, creating a relatively flat and safe water area. The wide beach allows comfortable setup and safe launching. Takapuna's conditions are ideal for beginners and intermediate riders thanks to its shallow waters and moderate waves. More experienced riders can find more challenging conditions further offshore. The dominant wind blows from the southwest in winter and northeast in summer (sea breeze), offering regular sessions year-round. The best season runs from September to March, when the northeast thermal breezes are most reliable. The spot benefits from excellent infrastructure with parking, showers, toilets and numerous cafes and restaurants along the promenade. Several kitesurf and wingfoil schools offer lessons and equipment rental. Rangitoto Island, accessible by ferry, is a must-do excursion with its hike to the volcano summit. Watch out for tides: at low tide, vast sandbars are exposed, significantly changing the water area. It is advisable to check tide times before each session. The spot is also frequented by swimmers and paddlers, so respect the supervised swimming zones.
