Great Salt Plains is a unique kitesurf spot on Great Salt Plains Lake and its vast salt flats in north-central Oklahoma. This National Wildlife Refuge site offers miles of flat, smooth salt plains perfect for kiting and landkiting. The adjacent lake provides shallow water for kitesurfing. Powerful and consistent winds from all directions on this obstacle-free expanse. Surreal landscape resembling a salt desert. Season from April to November.

Very shallow brackish water on the lake. Flat, hard salt plains when dry — perfect for landkiting. Water temperature from 5°C in winter to 30°C in summer. Salt and mud bottom. Extremely variable water level — often very low. No wetsuit needed for landkiting, shorty for water in summer.
TORNADOES: monitor weather constantly. Violent supercell thunderstorms April to June. Very powerful winds with no obstacles on the plains. Extreme summer heat with salt reflection — rapid dehydration. Salt irritating to eyes and skin — rinse after session. Wildlife Refuge areas closed for nesting — respect signs. Rattlesnakes.
