Lake Buchanan is the largest lake in the Highland Lakes chain on the Colorado River, in the Texas Hill Country. This vast 22,300-acre reservoir offers immense water expanses and exceptional fetch for kitesurfing. Located about 60 miles northwest of Austin, the lake is surrounded by granite hills and ranchlands. Its impressive size and exposed location make it one of the best freshwater kitesurfing spots in Texas with often excellent wind conditions.
Very large freshwater body with impressive fetch that can generate sustained chop. Water quality varies by season. Significant depth in the main sections. Lake arms offer more protected areas. The lake can develop significant waves in strong winds. Granite rocky bottom in some areas.
Intermediate
Open all year round
The large lake size can make returning to shore difficult if wind drops. Severe thunderstorms possible with little warning. Submerged and protruding granite rocks. Boat traffic on weekends. Lake level can drop several meters during drought. Remote from emergency services — riding with a partner strongly recommended.
