Pont des Basses — Between Saint-Cyprien and Canet-en-Roussillon, at the breakwater/digue near the roundabout. Classic kite spot of Canet, mainly visited by kiters exploiting the 15+ knot afternoon SE thermal. Same conditions as Saint-Cyprien but closer to the digue which creates better wave formation by SE.
Waves build well thanks to the digue by SE, good for kitewave. Summer kite zone marked with buoys — once past 300 m you can ride anywhere. Exceptional SE thermal — can reach 25-30 kts on the best days while barely any wind elsewhere. Wide beach, parking nearby.
By Tramontane forte: works with Tramontane and Marin SE. By N-oriented Tramontane: sandbar creates fun small waves. Crowded in summer. FFVL labelled. School spot (Kitoo, CBCM).
Kitoo — Kite & wingfoil school based at Pont des Basses / Canet area. Year-round. Also travels to Argelès, Barcarès, Saint-Laurent. www.kitoo.fr. CBCM Boarder Club — Multi-sport school nearby. We Love Kite — Kite school at Canet, year-round, small group or individual lessons.
Open all year round
Sailing year-round. Summer (June-September): kite chenal with buoys for crossing 300 m zone. Derogation for 5 knots speed limit managed by Canet Kite Club. Best: summer thermal SE (June-September).
Intermediate
Sandy bottom. Beach faces ESE. Waves form nicely near the digue by SE — can reach 1.50+ m during depressions. By Tramontane: offshore flat close to shore, formed sea further out. Water 14-16°C winter, 20-25°C summer.
Parking near the roundabout at Pont des Basses, between Saint-Cyprien and Canet. Wide beach with dedicated kite launch area. Ganivelles can complicate launching.
SE Thermal / Marin: THE wind for Pont des Basses. Exceptional afternoon thermal, can reach 25-30 kts while dead calm at Leucate. Reliable June-September. Digue amplifies wave formation. The site Canet–Saint-Cyprien is one of the best SE thermal spots in the region.
Tramontane (NW/NNW): offshore, works when strong. By N-oriented Tramontane: small waves on sandbar. Experienced riders only in Tramontane. Tramontane 300+ days/year regionally.
Ganivelles and posts on beach: technical kite launching. Digue nearby: waves build against it by SE — don't ride too close. Tramontane offshore: very strong NW can push you rapidly out to sea. SE fort: spot becomes technical, powerful onshore waves. Balisage strict in summer — chenal buoys, kite zone, baignade zone. Respect the zones.
