Mud Lake is a kitesurf spot on a shallow lake in the Snake River plain in eastern Idaho. This natural alkaline lake offers vast shallow expanses and consistent southwest winds. Flat volcanic prairie terrain. Isolated and uncrowded spot. Lake level varies considerably with seasons and years. Season from May to October.

Shallow alkaline freshwater. Water temperature from 0°C in winter (frozen) to 22°C in summer. Very shallow — risk of hitting bottom everywhere. Muddy bottom. Extremely variable level — can be dry some years. Full 4/3 wetsuit in spring/fall, shorty in summer.
Very shallow lake: hitting bottom is nearly certain. Variable level — check conditions before coming. Isolation: limited cell coverage. Rattlesnakes. Thunderstorms with lightning in summer. Plain winds can be powerful.
