Open all year round
Intermediate
Detroit River water body, relatively flat with a constant southward current toward Lake Erie. Water is warmer than the Great Lakes thanks to passing through Lake St. Clair. Full wetsuit recommended in spring and fall, shorty in summer. Variable bottom. The current constantly influences riding and requires good upwind ability. River width approximately 1 km around the island.
Constant Detroit River current that can carry riders downstream. Intense commercial shipping — freighters and bulk carriers transiting between Great Lakes. International border with Canada — do not drift across unintentionally. Very heavy recreational boat traffic in summer. Port structures, docks, and pilings around the island. If wind dies, the current makes returning difficult. Violent thunderstorms possible.
