Overview

Point La Barbe is a kitesurf spot located in the Straits of Mackinac, on the Lake Huron side, near St. Ignace in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This point sits just east of the Mackinac Bridge, at the junction of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Strait currents and intense marine traffic create demanding conditions. The setting is spectacular with the Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island visible. Spot for advanced riders.

On the water

Straits of Mackinac water body on the Lake Huron side. Strong and variable currents crossing the strait. Waves can form in complex patterns with the currents. Very cold water — thick full wetsuit required, drysuit recommended in spring and fall. The strait channels and accelerates wind. Changing and technical conditions requiring experience.

Hazards

Very strong and unpredictable currents in the Straits of Mackinac. Intense commercial shipping — freighters and Mackinac Island ferries passing constantly. Mackinac Bridge nearby — absolutely avoid. Very cold water with major hypothermia risk. Weather changing rapidly in the strait. Ferry traffic between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Spot reserved for experienced riders.
