Gunn Road is an access point to the Red River Floodway, located northeast of Winnipeg. This 47 km channel, nicknamed "Duff's Ditch," was built in the 1960s to protect Winnipeg from flooding. When the channel is not in operation, the vast adjacent flood plains offer flat terrain exposed to prairie winds, ideal for land kiting or riding on residual shallow waters.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Floodway channel and adjacent flood plains. Very shallow water when present. Flat muddy bottom. Variable conditions depending on water level and season. The channel itself is narrow but the flood plains offer a wide, flat water body at high water.
Access prohibited when the channel is in operation (spring floods). Check Floodway status before any session. Muddy bottom that can trap feet. Debris possible in and around the channel. Urban/suburban area — power lines possibly nearby.
