Kitesurfing spot at Palmarolle, on Lake Abitibi, in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. Lake Abitibi is a huge shallow lake (average depth 3 meters) straddling the Ontario-Quebec border. It is one of the most northern and isolated spots in southern Quebec.
Lake Abitibi stretches about 80 km east to west, offering considerable fetch. The shallow depth generates short, fast chop, similar to Lac Saint-Pierre. Palmarolle is on the north shore of the Quebec section. Wild spot appreciated by the small local community. Short season from June to September.
Temperate fresh water in summer (18-22°C despite the latitude). Muddy bottom, very shallow everywhere. Short, tight chop characteristic of large shallow lakes. Wind can pick up quickly on this vast water body. Brownish water tinted by surrounding peatlands.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Very isolated spot — emergency services far away. Large exposed lake — conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Shallows everywhere. Violent summer thunderstorms in the Abitibi clay belt. Abundant mosquitoes and black flies in June-July. Black bears in the area.
