West Point / Discovery Park South is a kitesurfing spot in Discovery Park, Seattle's largest park, on a point jutting into Puget Sound. The West Point Lighthouse, built in 1881, dominates the landscape. This spot is one of the most exposed in the Seattle area, with direct access to the open waters of Puget Sound. Winds are stronger and more consistent than inside the bays, but tidal currents and maritime traffic make this spot reserved for advanced riders.
Cold Puget Sound water (8-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit recommended year-round, 5/3 in winter. Moderate to strong chop in northwest or southwest wind. Very powerful tidal currents around West Point. Mixed bottom (sand, pebbles, rocks). Regular winds at 12-25 knots, stronger than in Seattle's sheltered areas. Spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier.

Open all year round
Very powerful tidal currents around West Point: danger of being swept away. Intense maritime traffic: ferries, cargo ships, recreational boats, and tankers. Rocks and reefs around the point. Cold water year-round risking rapid hypothermia. West Point wastewater treatment plant nearby. Park access by trail: gear must be carried. Few rescue options if drifting offshore.
