On the water

Ocean spot with waves of 0.5 to 2m depending on Pacific swell. Water is cold (11-16°C/52-61°F), a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended year-round. Sandy bottom with rocks and reefs nearby. Drift currents and rip currents possible. Kelp beds are common offshore. Good wave riding conditions when the swell is clean.

Hazards

Coastal rocks and reefs — major obstacle, scout the area before riding. Frequent rip currents. Cold water year-round — hypothermia risk. Kelp that can tangle in lines and fins. Great white sharks present in Monterey Bay — low but real risk. Powerful shore break on big swell days.
