Overview

Moddergat is a small Frisian fishing village (municipality of Noardeast-Fryslan) located on the north coast of Friesland, facing the Wadden Sea and Schiermonnikoog. Discreet Wadden Sea spot, uncrowded, used by locals. Access from the coastal dyke (Waddendijk). Standing-depth water at high tide, sandy-muddy bottom. Direct view of Schiermonnikoog and the Wadden Sea sandbanks.

From Dokkum: head towards Paesens/Moddergat via the coast. Parking on the dyke. Rideable 2-3 hours around HW. Wear booties (muddy bottom). Spot with no facilities — bring all your gear. Check tide times before heading out.

NE/E: best directions — wind free from the North Sea via the Wadden Sea, flat water. N/NNE: stable wind. SW/W: offshore from the continent — less favourable. Typical Wadden Sea flat water.
Hazards
Wadden Sea bottom: mixed mud and sand (muddier than Lauwersoog) — wear booties at all times. Possible mussel beds. Only rideable around high tide — at low tide, water too far away. Active tidal current. No facilities or rescue on site — local and discreet spot. Historic fishing village (Paesens-Moddergat) — respect the environment.
