Spot de Sotavento / Fuerteventura

Sotavento / Fuerteventura

Sotavento / Fuerteventura

Overview

Sotavento is a legendary spot discovered in the 70s. Since then, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and now wing foiling have developed strongly there. Fuerteventura is a rather desert-like island and the Jandia beach is long and magnificent. If you have a strong heart, try the speed run at 50cm from the beach, kilometers of guaranteed pleasure! However, when the wind picks up, it's not very "family friendly".

Wind generally N-NE side-off with a kite/windsurf/wing center and rescue service on site (Rene Egli).

Irregular wind but very rideable on the Atlantic. During high tide coefficients and for a few days, a huge lagoon forms along the entire beach, an experience to live!

Local association recommendations

René Egli Windsurf & Kitesurf Centre — exclusive licence holder for the lagoon. Full services: lessons, rental, rescue, shop. One of the most iconic centres in the world.

GKA Kite World Cup and PWA Windsurfing World Tour held here annually (usually July).

Spot functioning

Two distinct areas:

The Lagoon: during high tide coefficients, a spectacular 4km+ lagoon fills along the beach — waist-deep, flat, turquoise water. Perfect for beginners and freestylers. Walk upwind, ride downwind. Hundreds of kiters can fit without crowding.

The Ocean side: open Atlantic with choppy to wave conditions. Better for advanced riders. Speed runs along the beach at 50cm water depth — kilometres of pure pleasure!

Check lagoon status before travelling — the lagoon only fills a few weeks per month during higher tide coefficients.

René Egli provides lessons, rental, rescue, and all services.

On the water

Lagoon: flat, turquoise, waist-deep, sandy bottom. Ocean: choppy to waves depending on swell. Water temperature 18–23°C. 3/2mm shorty typically sufficient.

Parking

From Puerto del Rosario airport: ~74km south (~1h drive). From Costa Calma: ~3km south. Car rental recommended. René Egli offers shuttle for clients.

Hazards

Side-off wind, so take the rescue package at the René Egli center.

Wind specificities

The wind at Sotavento is a mix of trade winds that arrive from the west coast of the island (in summer) and are compressed by the terrain (venturi effect) and reinforced by the thermal effect, all of which hits the Sotavento beach in patches.
From late May to late August is the best period, outside this period it still works, but it's not 100%. Wind forecasts are always lower than the actual wind (Venturi effect / thermal effect not taken into account by weather models)
