Spot de El Medano, Tenerife

El Medano, Tenerife

El Medano, Tenerife

Overview

The must-visit spot of the island where riders like Lorenzo Casati, Leonardo Casati, Jérémy Burlando and Andrea Principi grew up, and where you can see them training in strong winds.

The best places to jump are near the wall right next to the El Cabezo windsurfing spot, to access it you need to go 300m upwind. And that's the real magic of the spot: the waves come in like kickers and help you jump very high. Or to the right of the beach, just in front of Montana Roja.

Be careful, as the wind is sideshore and sometimes gusty close to the beach, the spot is not suitable for beginners - you will inevitably drift towards rocks with the risk of losing your gear.

When the beach is open to swimmers, the red cross will also help in case of problems with a jet ski (free of charge, but best avoided).

The setting with the Teide volcano in the background is impressive, and the water is warm all year round (shorty or 3/2 in winter, lycra or shorty in summer). And the town of El Medano has plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy after your session.

Parking

Along the road, but definitely not in front of the Playa Sur hotel where the entrance is reserved for emergency services and to avoid getting a fine.

Hazards

Rocks downwind are the main reason why this spot is not recommended for beginners. With the wind that is always helping, you will inevitably drift there if you don't know how to go upwind properly.
Rocks also emerge from the water at the end of the beach during low tide.

Wind specificities

The main wind is the North-east wind (Trade wind) which is normally between 15 and 25 knots sideshore, but can rise in summer up to 45 knots. The wind is gusty close to the beach as it is disturbed by the hotel near the wall, you should avoid leaving the kite at noon and move away from the beach quickly.

The El Cabezo weather station works very well: https://cabezo.bergfex.at/wetterstation/?big=1

The spot also works with south-west wind, but then the wind is offshore and more gusty. In this case, it's better to go to La Tejita beach on the other side of Montana Roja, 3km away.
